German School Clothes:  First Day--Unidentified Berlin Brothers (about 1905)

Figure 1.--Here we have a CDV portrait of two boys, presumably brothers. All we know about the portrait is that it was taken in Berlin. We would guess that it was taken about 1905. The boys hold a slate written in old German script: "Unseren ersten Schulgang", i.e., "Our first school walk". Click on the image to see the slate.

Here we have a CDV portrait of two boys, presumably brothers. All we know about the portrait is that it was taken in Berlin. We would guess that it was taken about 1905. The boys hold a slate written in old German script: "Unseren ersten Schulgang", i.e., "Our first school walk". I assume that means the first day of school. The boys are dressed alike. There outfits look rather like a uniform, but I think that they are brothers and mother has dressed them alike. They wear caps which look rather like peaked caps. Unfortunately we can not see the caps very well. They have blouced jackets with short ties which can be seen very well because they are the same color as the jacket. They also wear kneepants and long stockings. The kneepants only have two ornamental hem buttons. Three buttons were much more common in America. Note the book satchels and lunch holders. Notice the boys do not have the gift cones. We see other boys in the early 20th century with these cones so we are not sure why these boys do not have them.
