Japanese School Uniform: First Day Portrait (1953)

Figure 1.-- Here we have a first day school portrait dating from 1953. The boy has a Prussian-style cadet cap. He has a white open collar worn with a mock double-breated jacket. It almost certainly was done in navy blue. We at first thoight it was a an Eton-style jacket without lapels. A reader points out, however, that if you look very close, there are lapels. As school uniforms evolved in Japan, Eton jackets sithout lapels did become popular for boys. There are matching long short pants, black long stockings and colored sneakers. He is pictured standing formally at attention.
