South African School Garments: Footwear

Figure 1.--Here we see the uniforms at a private school in 2005. One of the options was going barefoot. Click on the images to see the girls uniforms.

I have little information at this time on the shoes and sandals South African children wore to school. The shoe styles seem very similar to English footwear styles. We do not see many children wearing sandals. One significant difference from England is that many children go to school barefoot. One notiable trend is the tendency of many primary school children to go barefoot. This appears to have been an option even at schools which had required uniforms. We are not sure why children go barefoot. As it occurs even at private schools, we assume that many children prefer to go barefoot.

Shoes

Shoe styles seem very similar to English footwear styles. Many schools had dress uniforms that were work with black low-cut ocfords. These night be worn both with the dress unform as well as the everyday standard uniform, especially the winter uniform.

Sandals

We do not see many South African children wearing sandals. A factor here was that many children went barefoot. When children came to school brefoot, sandals were generally not very common.

Barefeet

One significant difference from England is that many South African children go to school barefoot. One notiable trend is the tendency of many primary school children to go barefoot. This appears to have been an option even at schools which had required uniforms. We are not sure why children go barefoot. As it occurs even at private schools, we assume that many children prefer to go barefoot. This seem primarily an option at primary schools. I don't know if any school required the children to go barefoot. The dress codes varies from school to school.
