American Eton Collars: Chronology--1930s

Figure 1.--We begin seeing younger American boys wearing junior Eton suits in the 1920s. This style became more common in the 1930s as the detachable Eton collar for older boys continued to decline in popularity. Here we see three pals on the playground slide, perhaps New York's Central Park. We are not sure when this snapshot was taken, perhaps the 1930s. Blouses with both Eton and Peter Pan collars became popular for these junior Eton suits. Here we are not entirely sure if the boys have detachable or attached blouse collars. We are guessing that all three came from well-to-do families.

The standard detachable Eton collar continued to decline in popularity for boys. We note a well-to-do Ohio boy wearing a classic detachable Eton collar with the lapelless junior Eton suit jacket we believe in the 1930s, but it could be the 40s. He wears his Eton collar with a necktie. We note the Tucker boys, also from an afflunt family wearing classic detachable Eton collars in 1937. Theyalso wear the junior Eton jackets. Actual classic Eton collars were becoming less and less common, still worn largely by boys from well-to-do conservative families. While it had not yet disappeared, we no longer see it very commonly, What we do see is younger boys weearing Eton collars, commonly wih short pants suits. This was much more common than older boys wearing them. We see younger boys wearing Eton collars with these junior Eton suits. This was a style we began to see in the 1920s. The ages declined in the 1930s and by the end of the decade we see some boys wearing them only to anout 8 years of age. These junior Eton suits had jackets that did not have lapels. Other boys wore them with standard sack suit jackets. We think these were blouses with Eton collrs rather than detchable collars. This was a style that would continue for some time with boys wearing both Eton and Peter Pan collar blouses.
