There are over 40 different towns with beaches that are located along New Jersey's picturesque shore. They vary greatly in the beach front and the amenities available. Nre Jersey has the longest Atlantic coastline of all the 13 original states. And only Florida that entered the Union a few decades later has a longer Atlantic coast. They offer weekend visits, longer summer stays, spending the entire summer, and permanent living for coastal life. The Jersey Shore stretches over 140 miles from Perth Amboy in the north to Cape May Point in the south. Ocean front areas include Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic, and Cape May counties, which are in the central and southern parts of the state. The best known Jersey Shore resorts are Atlantic City and Ocean City, but there are many other enticing resorts. The Jersey Shore has the advantage of being located in the center of the Northeast Megalopolis extending from Boston south to Washington, D.C. Meaning that there are ten's of millions of people that are attracted to the beach resorts. The northern half of the Shore region is part of the New York metro area. The southern half is part of the Philadelphia metro area. Before Florida developed as the summer vacation destination, it was to the Jersey Short that the population of the developing Megalopolis headed during the summer. American beach resorts built boardwalks rather than the piers popular in Britain. There were piers such as at Atlantic City, but boardwalks were more common. As a result, the Jersey Shore has the greatest concentration of ocean side boardwalks in the United States.
