Pieter Gerardus Bernhard was a very accomplished Dutch artist doing prtraits and genre scenes. Despite a long life does not appoar to gave been very prolifuic. Pieter was born in The Hague (1813) and lived his long life there. We know very little about him. He begn exhibting his work in Amsterdam and The Hague at a young age (1833). One sourse sggests that he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts well after beginningto exhibit (1839). He studieds there under Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove and Jakob Josef Eeckhout. As well as painting He worked as an an art teacher. He is known to have taught Princesses Sophia and Louise. We have found only a few examples of Bernhard's work. Here we see 'The young geographer' dated 1840, relatively early in Bernhard's career. The unidentified boy wears a blueish-green tunic with a white collar and bow. We have very liitle infirmation about Dutch tunics, but believe they were a relatily common boys's garment in the 19th century. The bow is yellow, but not a bright yellow. The tunic has extenive pleating and very full sleeves. This was the style for blousesas well at the time. Notice the prominet black leather belt which has no practical purpose. Note the hair. There seems o be alonish lock on his right side. We are unsure if this is a portrait or a genre painting, perhaps both.
