Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Jan Claesz (1570s-1618)

Jan Claesz

Figure 1.--Jan Claesz was a Dutch artist spanning the 16th and 17th century. He is belirved to have been born in Enkhuizen (about 1570). He was active (1594–1618). The works we have noted are important men of the age and their wives. We have been unable to find much information about him. We do note a painting described as 'Jan Claesz circle'. This means an unattributed work that looks somewhat like a Claesz painting, but could have been done by an artist that may have been associated with Claesz and painted in a similar manner. While the artit is uncertain, it is dated. We can not make out the date clearly, but it looks like 1618.

This was an important time in the developoment of modern pants/trousers. in the 16th century, fashionable men wore what were called round or trunk hose, what might be called romper pants in modern terms. At some point they also began to be referred to as breeches. At the turn of the 17th century they evolved into longer breeches looking somewhat like full cut knickers. There was no real age factor at play here, both boys and men wore these fashions. Claesz was not a particularly prolific arttist, but he was active at a very imprtant pont in the develoment of male fashion. A few works are attributed to him, but many more are unatributed that bear some semblance to his style. only because so many.
