Einar Hein was a Danish painter who painted the landscapes and people of Skagen in northern Denmark. Einar was born in Copenhagen (1875). He studied at the Copenhagen Technical School under Holger Grønvold (1850-1923) before entering the Royal Academy (1892-96). He then went on to study at the Kunsternes Studieskole under P.S. Krøyer. He was strongly influenced by Krøyer to continue his his traiming at the studio of Alfred Philippe Roll in Paris. Hein was part of the younger generation of Skagen Painters (Skagensmalerne). They painted the dunes and beaches of Skagen in the far north of Jutland.
He became a regular visitor to Skagen arriving with his family each summer.
One of his most notable works is 'Legende børn på Skagens strand' -- Children Playing on Skagen's Beach paintd in 1910 (figure 1). The painting combined his landscape and portraiture work. His landscapes were painted against the light with characteristic subdued colors. The imge may look loke a poor qualitycan, but this is how he pained it. Hedin also did many portraits of the people in northerrn Denmark, including quite a number of children. We notice a portrait of a boy who grew up to be an important German movie actor. It is titled 'Portrait of a Boy' painted (1919). The boy is German actor Erland Erlandsen (1912-2003), who had Danish origins. Erland would have been about 7 years old in the portarit. It is landscapes, however for which he is best known. Of course for HBC it is his portraiture which is of greatest interest.
