Reinhard Heydrich: Funeral (June 1942)

Heydrich funeral

Figure 1.--Here we see Hitler with Himmler at the state funeral of Heydrich in the Mosaic Chamber of the New Reichschancellery in Berlin (June 1942). Wedo not know who the men behind the boys are. Hitler is conforting the Heydrich boys at the elaborate funeral. It seems a little strange tht the boys woild be in such good humor after their father's death. Perrhaps it was their age. Or maybe they were menorized by Hitler's presence. We would be interestedv in how readers assess this image.

Reinhard Heydrich was ast first expected to survive, but died of blood poisoning because of the infection of the wound (June 4). An elaborate funeral was staged in Prague (June 7). Heydrich's corpse was carried by train to Berlin. There a second ceremony was held in the Reich Chancellery (June 9). Here the NAZIs staged the most elaborate funeral in the history of the Reich (June 9). Himmler delivered the principal funeral address. Hitler attended, but spoke only briefly. "I have only a few words. He was one of the best National Socialists, one of the strongest defenders of the German Reich idea, one of the biggest enemies of all the enemies of the Reich. He is a martyr. He died for the preservation and protection of the Reich. As leader of the party and as a leader of the German Reich, I award you, my dear comrade Heydrich, the highest award that I give you: the Supreme Stage of the Teutonic Order." Hitler then personally placed Heydrich's decorations, the highest grade of the German Order, the Blood Order Medal, the Wound Badge in Gold, and the War Merit Cross 1st Class with Swords—on his funeral pillow. 【Williams, p. 165.】 Hitler comforted Heydrich's widdow and the two Heydrich boys. He if ciourse never mentioned his private criticism for Heydrich's reckless behavior. Privately he complained, "That a man as irreplaceable as Heydrich should expose himself to unnecessary danger, I can only condemn as stupid and idiotic." We were a little surprised by the boy's reaction. Here we see Hitler at the state funeral of Heydrich in the Mosaic Chamber of the New Reichschancellery in Berlin (figure 1). He is conforting the Heydrich boys at the elaborate funeral. It seems to us a little strange that the boys woild be in such good humor after their father's death. Perrhaps it was their age. Or maybe they were menorized by Hitler's presence.
