Here we have a cabinet card portrait of two Virginia brothers. The portrait is undated, but we think was probably taken in the 1890s. The brothers are Fredrick Dean Goodwin (7 years old) and Edward LeBeron Goodwin (8 years old), two school-age boys. They look like more than a year separates them, but the ages are written on the back. Height does not, howver, determine age. A reader tells us, "One of my two older brothers was short and I was tall so even though we were three years apart I was taller than him from the age of 9 onwards. And people thought he was my younger brother much to his embarrassment." Even though the boys were close in age, the boys were dressed differently. We can't tell much about Fredrick's suit, but it is probably a collar buttoning jacket. He also has a Peter Pan collar and large floppy bow. This was during the Fauntleroy Craze, but the nows are the only Fauntleroy item. Edward wears a double-breasted jacket and a smaller floppy bow. This illustrates why the smallest boys had the largest bows. We think he has a wing collar which was unusual for a boy so young. There is no additioinal information about the boys. The studio was Walrer Noel in Wytheville, a small town in southwestern Virginia.
