Australian Boys' Garments: Hosiery

Australian hosiery

Figure 1.--This Austraian CDv of a unidentified boy wears stripped long stockings. The porrait is undated. The dealer dates it at about 1875, which sonds reasonable. The CDV has pointed tips which in A,eoca and Brtain would fdate it vto the 1860s.But the striped stocvkinf were moreof van 1970s style. The studio was S. Solomon in Adelaide, South Australia. Solomon also seems to have run a school of Photography. Notice the shee skin in the back.

We have very little information on Australian hosiery trends during the 19th century. Our Australian 19th century archive is very limited. Our initial assessment is that Australian children dressed the same as English children did. The 19th century images we have found suggest that this was the case. We still see long stocking. We see some chilren wearing long stockings, but it was not nearly as common as in America. There was one exception that many more children beause of the mild climate went barefoot. We have much more information on the 20th century. We continue to see many children going barefoot, even to school or when dressed up. Going barefoot did not have the signa of poverty as was the case in Britain. Of course aajor factor affecting hosiety in Australia was the climate, much warmer than in Britain. Those children that wore shoes commonly wore socks rather than long stockings which also disappered in Britain. After the turn-of-the century, even before World War I (1914-18), we see three quarter socks and knee socks in the first half of the 20th century. Probably comparable to Britain. We see many children going barefoot through mid-century. This began to change in the 1960s and we begin to see more children wearing ankle socks.
