We have some information on Hungariab boys clothing during the 20th century, but our infornation is still very limited. Hungary is a small country which meand the photographic record is relativelt small. And as it borders on Austria and ids near Germny, was stronglyinfluenced by German fashion. Even with independence after World War I, German fashions continue to be of some imprtance. Of course Austrian/German fashions were related. The photograophic record we have begun to access does show Hungarian children strongly affected by German fashions and hair styling trends. The group here is a good example showing a German infkence (figure 1). After 1945 Hungary became a Communist People's Republic with the economy tied into the Soviet-dominated Eastern European block. We have little information, but believe East German (DDR) fashions seems to have been an important fashion influence. The photographic record suggests a strong German influence. he Soviets seized control of Hungary after World War II (1945). This did not entirely break the German influence as the Soviets incorporated eastern Germany in their Eastern European empire. The soviets and Communism did affect consumerism of all kinds, including the fashion industry, deemphasizing fashion of all kinds. Hungary by the 1960s was more open to the West than most other Soviet satellites and thus Western fashions were also of some importance.
The group here is a good example showing a German inflence (figure 1). Sailir suits cointinued to ve popular in Germany during the 190s and ecen (1920s-30s). This poorly colorized porttrai shows four unidentified children during World War I. Some of the names are Ruda, Pista, and Lali. wecan't read the rest of the inscription on the back except that the portrait was taken in Budapest in 1915. The boys wear matching velvet sailor suits with knickers or knee pants black long stockings. The girls wear summer frocks with white long stockings
We begin to see what might be called modern fashion trends after World War I in the 1920s. We have a stufdio portrait of a boy with his pooch which also has a bow. There is writing on the back which may have his name, but we can't read it. He looks to be bout 6-years old. We can see that it was taken in 1926. We are not sure how to describe his hat. He has a wide white collar worn with a large bow and what looks like a Norfolk jacket. He has knee pants worn with white three-quarter socks and starp shoes. Knee pants were ecolving iyto short pants, but the ornamental buttons at the knee hem were still often used on suit pants. .
