Hungarian Suit Garments: Jackets

Figure 1.--This unidentifie Hungarian boy wears a Norfolk suit, we think in the 1920s. Thesuit has knee pants ad is wrn with wjite kne socks and strap shoes.

We see Hungarian boys wearing the same standard suits as worn by boys throughout Europe. This includes the different styles of suits. This is commonly followed based on the design of the jacket. We do not know of any destinctive Hungarian suit styles. Nor do we have any 19th century information. We do know a little about the 20th century. Most of a suit styling is in the jacket. Our Hungarian archive is limited, so we do not yet know much about Hugarian suit styles. We have acquired a few images so we have begun to assess the suits worn by Hungarian boys. We note both collar-buttoning jackets as well as lapel jackets, including single- and double-breasted styles. Norfolk jackets were for a time popular. We notice quite a few boys wearing Norgolk jackets in the early-20th century. We see other styles as well. The sailor suit and double-breasted sack suits were popular at the turn-of-the 20th century. This is one of the fashion trends that occurred throughout Europe. Gradually as in other countries the single-breasted jacket like the boys here are wearing gradually became standard (figure 1).

Collar-buttoning Suits

One of the most popular styls for boys' suits during the 19th century was the collar buttoning jacket. This was the case throughout Europe and North America. It was also an important style in Hungary. As in other coyhntries, we have little information on the early-19th century, but with the appearance of photography (1839) we see many boys wearing these suits at mid-centurry. We see both civilian and militarty styles. Unfortuntely e have no Hungarian mid-century images, but suspect trends were similar to those in Austria and Germany. While the major feature was a collar and buton closure, these jackets were made in a wide rnge of cuts and features. We do see Hungarian examples with the appearance of the CDV (1860s). Except for the military, collar-buttoning jackets wer not common with adults, but were widely worn school-age boys. We do not know of any specific Hungarian styles, although there may have been some destinctive Hungarian decorative touches. We continue to see these collar-buttoning jackets into the early-20th century. These collar-buttoning jackets were worn with a variety of pants. The most common were knee pants, the standard type of pants for boys during the time that these jaclets were mpost popular.

Fauntleroy Suit

The Fauntleroy suit was a hugely popular American and British style, but much less popular on the Continent. . Our Hungaian archive is very limited. We thus do not know just how common Fauntleroy suits were in Hungary. Of course Germany and Austria were major influences, but our 19th century archive is nearly non-existent. But we do not see many Fauntleroy suits in Germany and Austria either. We do note a few 20th cehntury images. These are vestages of the Fauntleroy style among wealthy families in the inter-War era. We see the same phenomenon in Germany and Austria. They were sometimes worn with white long stockings, something not seen in the 19th century. We see some of this in America as well. The 1930s portrait here is a good example. He looks to be about 5 years old. The boy wears a short pahnts velvet suit with Fauntleroy touches, white long stockings, and strap shoes. The photographer has signed the paper frame, but we can not make it out. Notice the buttons on the shorts, still a common device for dressy suits. He has a Fauntleroy blouse with a modest collar.

Lapel Jacket Suits

Norfolk Suits

Norfolk jackets were for a time popular. We notice quite a few boys wearing Norgolk jackets in the early-20th century. Norfok suits were done in a variety of ways. They were done both with and without lapels. The chracteristic elements of Norfolk styling was vertical vents and horizontal belts. We see jackets with bothbelements as well as with just the verical vents and horizontal belts. Flap pockers were some times used. We are not yet sure about the chronology. We kno nothing about the 19th cenbtury t thi time. We note Norgolk jackets in the early-20th century through the 1930s.

Sailor Suits

HBC has little information on the sailor suits worn by Hungarian boys. Our Hungarian archive is very limited. We believe that they were commonly worn by boys, but because we have so little information and so few images, we can not say a great deal at this time. Hungary is of course a land-locked country located squarely in the middle of Europe. But before 1918, Hungary was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and thus did not have a sizeable navy. HBC is unsure at this time to what extent there were differences between Austria and Hungay as to the popularity of the sailor suit or the styles of sailor suits worn. We notice one boy in 1911 wearing an all-white kneepants sailor suit, even the neck scarve was white. Only his long stockings were not white. We do see Austrian boys living in Budapest and oyher large cities wearing sailor suits before Workd War I. We are less sure about Hungarian boys, but we susprct it was fairly common among middle-class boys in the cities. We are not sure about the era following the War. We have no information at this time as to sailor suits worn in Hungary after World War I.
