Scottish Juvenile Suits: Colar-buttoning Suits

Scottish Fauntleroy suits
Figure 1.--This CDV portrait shows two siblings who look to be about 2-5 years old. The boy weas a velvert cillar buttoning jacket with braid ribbon piping. The sdecoration is varried over into the knee pants. His sisters looks to be wearing a white coat. The boy has a sailor hat with streamers. His sister wears a conicak hat.

Beginning about the mid-19th century we see collar-buttoning jackets becoming a major style fir boys that would last into the early-20th century. This was primarily a style for school-age boys, but we see some school-age boys wearing them as well. The collar-buttoning suits for younger boys might be done a little differently. We see all kinds of stripe and edging trim added to the suits in the 1870s-80s. There also may be some ebroidery. This appears to have been primarily flat ribbon trim, sometimes called piping. This might include matching stripe detailing on the pants Unfirtuntely, not all of this shows up in the available imagery, especially if we do not have reasononably sized scans. We alson see specialized suits such as Fauntleroy suits. The clssic Fauntleroyvsuit was done with a cut-sway jackert, but dome Fauyntleroyv suits were done withbcollar-buttoning jacket. We begin to see these suits about 3 years of age. Earlier than that the boys were not yet breeched, although this began to change, especially by the late-19th century. Younger boys suits might be done in velvet. We are not entirely sure about this as our Scottish archive is still limited. As far as we can tell, the styling of these suits in Scotland were identical to trends in England. The examples we have found are mostly done with knee pants.
