Unidentified American Private Summer Camp (1942)

Figure 1.--Here we see a scene at an unidentified private camp. The photograph looks to have been taken at the beginning of the day. Other photographs with this one suggest that the photograph was taken in 1942 or 43.

Here we see a scene at an unidentified private camp. The photograph looks to have been taken at the beginning of the day. We were not sure at first sure if it was the beginning or end of the day. We finally decided the begonning of the day. The day is too light to be afternoon. It has more the feel about it of a flag raising than a lowering. Also the boys look too clean for an evening pageant and they don't look tired. Another reader writes, "Another indicator. The building has no lights showing.I think this isanother indicator that its morning and not evening." Other photographs with this one suggest that the photograph was taken during World war II, 1942 or 43. Note the uniforms worn by the staff and boys. There is some variety. The camp seems to have had a dark and light-colored shirt worn with khaki shorts. Note the vertical strip on some of the shorts. That was very common for camp wear, although we are not quite sure how this convention developed. There also seem to be socks with colored bands that some of the boys wear.
