The photographic record provides in insights in the developing music instruction in America. Weseeall kinds of children learning musical intruments. This boys looks rather young to be palying the drums. But the drum set seems a rather elkaborate studio prop. The unidenifed boy wears a sailor suit with muted detailing. Commonly dark suisere done with whie tie detiln. This boy's suit has dark embroidey ht is difficul to see. He also has has unusual longback hair. He looks to be about 5-years old. The porrait is undated, but the mount suggests it was taken about 1900. The studio was A.W. William in Ferndale, California. eader provides further details.
"Like HBC I suspect the photo was taken in a studio and the drum set was a prop.
The boy's hairstyle is also very interesting. As far as I can tell, he has very tight ringlets on his forehead (4). Similarly tight ringlets on the side front of his head by his ears. I count 3 and it appears he maybe wearing a stocking cap set back on his head. Though the image is too difficult to know for sure that it is not his hair worn like a mullet.
His sailor suit is also unusual in that it seems to be woven (my guess is that it is wool) and has either brocade or velvet or velveteen flourishes on the sailor collar and matching shield. The collar is of the same material as the sailor middy and attached to it. Often they were removable for cleaning. This creates a lapel looking sailor collar. The collar has a sailor ribbon in black which suggests that the sailor suit is not black, probably navy blue. The embroidery or velvet touches are probably black as well. The boy also wears a small silk plaid floppy bow. He appears to have some sort of embroidery or something on his sleeves just above the cuff hem. I can't quite make out whether they match the embroidery or velvet touches on the shield and sailor collar. He definitely has buttons on the knee pants which are of the same material and collar as his sailor top. His woolen long stockings are heavily ribbed and black. His button high top shoes have patten leather on the parts that do not button." We do not qute understand what is going on wih his hair in heback. There loks o be alo of hair their which does not seem to be curled.
