United States Boys' Clothes: Welch Family (1910s)

American families 1910s
Figure 1.-- Unfortunately this image is undated and unplaced. We believe that the photograph was taken in the 1910s, probably in Oaklahoma. It is rather an unusual photograph as the father has a horse and the boy a goat. They are out in the country somewhere. We do know tht it is the Welch family.

Unfortunately this image is undated and unplaced. We believe that the photograph was taken in the 1910s. It certainly looks like it was taken in a Western state but we are not sure about that. It is rather an unusual photograph as the parent have horses and the boy a goat. They are out in the country somewhere. Perhaps a picnic, but who would take a goat to a picnic. And if they are out in the coutry, why would only the parents come on horses. We do have, however, the names of the family member. From left: unknown wife of Frank Welch, Frank Welch, Leonard Welch (with goat), Nancy Jane Hardin Welch, Solon Orlonzo Welch Sr. The older folks surely must be Lenorard's grandparents. Lenorard ssems rather over dressed for an outing in the country. He wears a flat cap and a Norfolk knickers suit, but is barefoot. While going barefoot wearing a suit seems strange to us today, we see quite a few such images in Anerica during the early 20th century. A reader writes, "I am not convinced that the boy is barefoot. He seems to be wearing some sort of shoes to my eye (we can't see his toes, for instance), and I also think that he may be wearing stockings. I think I detect a wrinkle here and there--but the photograph is admittedly very unclear. His legs look a bit darker than his hand, but of course this could just be the way the light is falling in the photograph." I think the boy is barefoot, athough the image is not very clear. Another reader writes, "I think this photograph was taken in Oklahoma. I found a death certificate of Solon Orlonzo Welch issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Health in 1926. He was born in 1850. Also it certainly looks to me like Leonard is barefoot."
