This unidentified American boy wears a button-on outfit. There is no collar, but a small bow. For some reason it was considered stylish to cover up the buttons with a matching fabric waist belt. Notice the full sleeves and cuffs as well as the bloomer knickers and white stockings. This CDV is undated, but looks kike it was taken in the 1860s. The boy looks to be about 8-years old. The studio was George M. Rice in Worcester, Massachusetts.
A reader writes, "What I find that is so interesting is the Zuoave-styled pants. They are side buttoning have a band closure above the ankle and seem to attach to the shirt at the side. They also appear to lack a fly (though that may be the camera angle). The outfit almost looks like a romper if it were one piece that will become fashionable about 50 years later."
HBC doesn't think these would have been seen as Zouave pants, although admittedly that is only a guess. Also I don't see a band above the ankles. I think the pants hem was bloused with string ties, just like blouses. I don't think there was a fly, but side waist closures.
