We have found images that we do not fully understand. Our assessment with these images is to provide our assessment in hope that readers will have insights to offer so we can better understand these images. We can generally understand 20th century images because we lived thrush more than half of it. The 19th century is often more difficult to understand because we are so far removed from it.
Here we have a a tin-type of two unidentified boys. They are dressed identically. They could be brothers, but there is no facial similarity. So they could be unrelated boys wearing uniforms. The thing is that the cadet-like collar buttoning jackets were very common. The collar is more like a uniform than a standard suit collar. They look to be about 10 years old. We thought at first that they could be bell hops because their caps look like pill box caps. But if you look at the cap the boy on the right is holding. It clearly has a bill {peak) meaning that the boy in the left' cap also has a bill. But the style is different than that worn by boys in the Amy. Tin-types began to betaken (mid-1850s), but we note very few Civil War tin-types. And early-1860s tin types are mostly cased portraits. So perhaps the most likely explanation are boys at a military school, but at this tome his is just a guess.
