New Zealand Fine Arts Education: Art Courses

Here are some of the courses that a New Zealnd secondary school might offer in art. The basic courses will be offered at virtually any school. The more specialized courses will vary greatly from school to school. There will be extensive courses on drawing and then a diversity of courses such as print making, painting, and sculpture. Most schools also offer photography within the art curiculum.

Year 9/Form 3

This is the art course available to first year students at most secondary school. First year students have only limited time for elective courses, so only one course is offered.

Year 10/Form 4

Year 10 students are allowed more elective subjects and, as a result, more art courses are available for them.

Year 11/Form 5

By year 11, schools being offering sophisticated couse work aimed at students that may be thinking about a career in art.

Year 12/Form 6



Year 13/Form 7

The Year 13 curriculum offers speclized courses in printmaking, painting, and photography for the advanced students. Each student chooses one of the three areas to pursue.
