World War II: Van Engelen Family--Saving Jews


Figure 1.-- This is us with the the Karp family and friends after our liberation (August 1945). They were a happy, well off Dutch Jewish family. Many German Jewish families escped to the Netherlands. But the Karps were Dutch Jews. The numbers identify evryone at the table.

This is the Karp family and friends before the War. They were a happy, well off Dutch Jewish family. Many German Jewish families escaped to the Netherlands. But the Karps were Dutch Jews. Missing from the photograph was Leo's brother Jo, who was absent the day we visited the family. And also missing was his sister Lea, who was in hiding during the War, in Leidschendam and survived.

Missing is Roosje Karp, who was recuperating following her release from Auschwitz Concentration Camp and released from Ravenbrück Concentration Camp, arranged by the Swedish Red Cross--the White Buses.

Leo's father Mr. Karp Jacob Rudoplh died in the Dutch Concentration Camp of Vught.

Leo's brother Max, a violinist, first being interned in the Dutch Concentration Camp of Vught and then transported to the Auschwitz Concntation Camp where he perished.

After the War Leo Karp became a high school teacher and official translator -- English. Martin Bremer headed up a newspaper sports section. Bob Bremer headed up a television sports section.
