German Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: 1938

Figure 1.--This German publication was entitled 'Kinder-Garderobe', meaning 'Children's Wardrobe'. That sounds more like a description than the name of a mail order company. Perhaps our German reader will know more about that. It was the summer 1938 punlication. It was issue number 57. You had to pay RM (Reichmark) 1.50 for it. We thought it was a catalog for finished clothing. It may be a pattern catalog. 'Beilage: Schnittbogen mit 20 modullen' means -- Supplement: cut sheet with 20 modules. That sounds like patterns. Note the Confirmation and Communion offerings. This publication appears to reproducing pages from a French catalog entitled 'Star'. We are not entirely sure why they would do this. Hopefully our German readers will be able to offer some insights.

We have a German catalog entitled 'Kinder-Garderobe', meaning 'Children's Wardrobe'. That sounds more like a description than the name of a mail order company. Perhaps our German reader will know more about that. It was the summer 1938 catalog. It was issue number 57. You had to pay RM (Reichmark) 1.50 for this catalog. A red circle tells us, 'Dieses Album enthált KONFIRMATION und KOMMUNION Kleider', meaning 'This album [we are not sure why the term album rathan than Katalog is used.] contains CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION oufits.' The Communion outdits offered seem to be from a French catalog. The company tells us, "Sämtliche Schnitte Vorrätig" meaning all sections in stock. At the bottom it reads, "Beilage: SCHNITTBOGEN MIT 20 MODELLEN. Gesamtauslieferung für den deutschen Buchhandel" Richard ranke & Sohn vorm. Hoffmann & Ohnstein, Leipzig C1." That means someyhing like, "Supplement: CUTTING BOW WITH 20 MODELS. Total delivery for the German book trade "Richard & Son vorm. Hoffmann & Ohnstein, Leipzig C1." We do not understand what this meant. And even more confusing, the catalog appear to reproducing pages from a French catalog entitled 'Star'. There is no indication on the cover thast there are French pages included. They do not seem to be just pages in French, but reproduced pages from a French catalog. We are not sure how many of the pages were French or if there were any other foreign pages. We are not entirely sure why they would do this. Hopefully our German readers will be able to offer some insights on this rather unusual German catalog..

Dresses

The cover of the 'Kinder-Garderobe' catalog shows three girls wearing light-weight summer dresses (figure 1). There are two ptterned dresses for younger girl. One has a small Peter Pan collar and pom tie neckwear. It is a short dress with puff sleeves. Another girl wears a red dress with small polka-dots. Both younger girls wear white anklets and strap shoes, both white and light-blue. It is a collarless dress. The teenage girl has a collarless dress with puff sleeve, cut longer than the dresses for the younger girls.

Suits

The boy on the cover of 'Kinder-Garderobe' summer catalog wears a conservative grey single-breasted short pants suit (figure 1). The lapels are commonly an element that changes over time. Here they are rather small. The add copy is on a page inside the catalog.
