American Sailor Suit Sewing Pattern (1892)

Figure 1.--This was a sailor suit pattern offered in 1892. The styling of the suit seems a little unusual, especially the deep cut of the sailor collar, the belted trousers, the lack of blousing for the blouse, and the stripped dickey. The suits were, however, made in great variety during the 1890s.

Sailor suits were a popular outfit for boys and we see many different styles. Nany mothers sewed the clothes for their children at home. We note a sewing pattern for a kneepants sailor suit. We do not yet know what company produced this pattern. We do not know a great deal about home sewing, but believe that it was more common to sew a girl's dress than a boy's suit. This is because of the greater complication with a suit and alsp probably with the greater interest in fashion on the part of both the girl and her mother. This was a pattern to be made into a navy blue sailor suit. It was for a boy 5-7 years of age (30 chest, 26 waist). I'm not sure what those numbers meant. Measured in inches it would seem to be too large for a small boy. The suit consisted of a sailor blouse that did not blouse. It was to be made in navy blue serge. Note the deep cut of the collar. It was worn with a shield (dickey) of cross barred (striped) white flannel. Yardage given was 1.5 yards (54 inch wide) serge and 0.5 yards of stripped plannel. The styling of the suit seems a little unusual, especially the deep cut of the sailor collar, the belted trousers, the lack of blousing for the blouse, and the stripped dickey. The suits were, however, made in great variety during the 1890s. Notice the cross hatching rather than traditional stripes.
