We see a variety of special suit styles for youngr pre-school or early-primary school boys in 1922. Frankkin & Simons in theuir 1922-23 fall/spring catalog called them 'novelty suits'. There were sailor, Fauntleroy, Oliver Twist, and other styles, variously sized for boys 2-10 years of age. There are Fauntleroy, Eton, and Peter Pan collars. Ther are both attached, and detachable collars. Many were styles also offered by Altmans. Fauntleroy and sailor styles are well known. The Fauntelroy suits (Nos 240 and 246) have a an etra set detachable collars and cuffs. Presumably this reflects that the collars and cuff were the bits most likely to get soiled. Oliver Twist styles (Nos. 242, 248, and 252) need a little explaining. They are basically styles based on early-19th century skeleton suits, but with shortened-length pants rather than the long pants mostly done with skeleton suits. Sailor suits might be done with long oants, but not the other style. Note the shirt pants done with these suits were cut long, not much different than knee pants. This was the basic length for the short pants appearing at the time. Many were done with large white buttons a decorative touch for button-on outfits. We see both blouses and detachable collars and cuffs. One interesting suit is no. 244 model junior suit. We thought the model was wearing a blouse or shirt, but apparently there was a collar connected to the a vest, an unusual comnbination. This was one of the few suits done in sizes for 10-year olds. Most of the other suits offered by Franklin & Simon only go up to size 8-year olds. The prices look inexpensive to themodern eye, but they are not. The inflated price in 2024 would be about 20 times the 1922 listed price. Thus a price of $9.75 would be nearly $200 in 2024.
