The major American mail order catalogs commonly had a page or two for youth groups, especially the Scouts. Thos was still common in the 1980s. Here we have a page from the J.C. Penny's Fall and Winter 1984 catalog for Cub Scouts. The page wa fron the Fll and Winter catalog. But they just used the same image from the summer catalog. The short slece, short pants uniform was the summer uniform. The long sleeve, long pants uniform was the winter uniform. The uniform items were on the expensive side, so many Cubs often substituted jeans they aleady had rather than the full uniform. Conveniently the jeans were blue. Black leather shoes were a bit if an anacronism in the 1980s, boys mostly wore sneakers with their Cub uniform. Note the new baseball cap replacing the traditional peaked cap the Cubs wore since the 1930s. And the new knee socks with yellow tops. We see a full array of Cub products such as colored T-shirts for summer outdoor activities, pen knives, and books.
