American Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: The 1980s

Casual styles were dominant in the 1980s. They were widely worn to school as well as for casual wear. Boys tended to see wearing a collared shirt as dressing up. Garments like "T"-shorts, sweatshirts, and jeans were very popular. Designer jeans were all the rage. "T"-shirts wih logos were in fashion. Denim was the dominant fabric. Short pants contunue popular in the 1980s. Short cut styles were fashionsable. Cord shorts were popular iun the early-80s. Tube stoicks were still popular in the early 80s. Boh boys and girls wanted to wear fashionable sneakers rather than leather shoes. Ski-style pajamas continued to be popular for boys.

We note Simplicity patterns for casual shirts and pants. The patterns were not dated, but we believe came from the 1980s. We have another Simplicity pattern for casual clothes including shirts, tank tops, shorts, skorts, and skirts. Unlike catalogs, patterns were not dated.

We note a J.C. Penny catalog psage offering a range of children's underwear, including Druit-of-the-Looom Undeoos. Ski-style pajamas continued to be popular for boys. Ski pajamas are a long-term popular style for American boys. These were offered by J.C. Penny in its 1981 catalog (figure 1). They were done with super-hero logos. Unlike Underoos, they were not dine as costumes. They were made for boys 8-18 years, but suspect they wee more popular for ther pre-teen sage group. Note the hair styles.

'Creative Needle', a sewing magazine, offered instructions for sewing green smocked overalls rather like longalls, The boy is wearing a Peter Pan collar blouse and black or dark blue double buckle T-strap shoes. This was from the September 1986 issue.

1989

We notice fashions for younger boys showcasing embroidery work in the fall 1989 issue of Sew Beautiful. A pre-school boy wears shortalls. As is often the case with shortalls he is pictured wearing English closed toe-sandals. A slightly older boy wears bib-front overalls. Another pre-school boy wears a Peter Pan blouse and button-on shorts. Another boys wears suspender knicker-length pants. The garments have fun embroidered work with appealing fire trucks and tractors. The garments were depicted in an article entitled "back to school fashion". The boys pictured, however, are mostly pre-school boys. We notice children done up in Christmas outfits in the Sew Beautiful Holiday Issue. The boy who looks to be about 3 years old wears a fancy Peter Pan collar with lace trim and elaborate front embroidery. It is a button-on outfit wirn with white knee socks and white double buckle English sandals.
