American Clothing Manufacturers: C. Atsma

Atsma
Figure 1.-- .

We noticed a catalog published by Mrs. C. Atsma aparently in 1901. We thought that it was a small business, because we cannot find a trace on the internet. There may be a misunderstanding. One source suggests that there were 160 pages, but this may be a reference to catalog no. 160 seen here. That is too large for a clothig manufacturer that has such a limited poiduct offering. Atmas was an established company selling clothes and patterns for younger children in the 1890s and 1900s. It had a narrow range of clothing--Baby's dainty and children's pretty clothing. 'Pretty' suggests girls clothing, but can also describe clothes for younger boys. The company was established in 1892, but Mrs. Atsma had been manufactring and dealing since about 1880. She claims to have 'supplied over 1 million young mothers with my patterns and baby clothes'. She was located in Newark, New Jersey, formrly in Bayone. We have Atsma pages offering short dresses for younger children. Short dresses meant dresses for younger children beyond the indfant stage where very long dresses were common. The term children mean boys and girls. While the convention of younger boys wearing dresses was going out of tyle, in the 1900s decadewestillsee some yongr boys wearing dresses.
