Vladimir Suteev was a prolific illustrator and creator of cartoons. A Russian reader tells us that one of his favorite books illustrated by Suteev was the children's fairy tale The Crocodile, published in 1950. Here is a scene from the book with the main characters--the boy Vanya and the Crocodile (figure 1). Vanya and The Crocodile are having tea with the author of the book. He is the Russian writer, poet, and, translator Korney Chukovsky, famous for his children stories and numerous translations from English -- Mark Twain, Oscar Wild, Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling and so on. Note the outfit that Vanya is wearing. It a Russian-styled shirt. It was a style based on peasant clothing. HBC calls them tunic suits. They were popular in the West in the erly 20th century and often called Russian blouses. These shirts/tunics were commonly worn in rural areas by peasants before the Revolution, but rapidly disappeared after the Revolution (1917). A Russian reader tells us that the form of the neckband identifies the various Russian, Ukrainian, and Belorussian variants, each of which have slightly different forms. The boy is also shown wearing short pants and long grey stockings. Our Russian reader tells us, "I suppose that such a fashion was briefly emerged in the secong half of the Second World War (since 1943), in a time of a short activisation of Russian nationalism and rising interest to national history and traditions. No doubt, such a fashion couldn't be for everyday - but I suppose such suits could be worn for some celebrations or birthdays."
