Indian School Activities: Classrooms

Figure 1.--Here is a photo of a classroom in rural Bihar. This is a state in northeastern Indiabordering on Nepal. It is the second largest state in terms of population. It is a relatively small class, about 20 students, both boys and girls. Iis well-lit colorful room, with learing material painted on the wall in Hindi and English. .

We do not yet have much information on the Indian school classroom. India is a relatively poor country with a very low oercapita income. This of course affects the financing of the school system. Especially the school buildings and the furishing of the classrooms. We see many classrooms that look much like Western schools. This is especially true of secondary schools where the children tend to have desks. The situation for primary schools is much more varied. Here there is quite a range of classrooms, including some still very basic classrooms in rural schools. his has gradualy imprved as India since independence has been building the world's largst public school system. Many primary children do not have desks. This is still quite common in rurals schools, but we see schools that arewell lit band appointed with maps and colorful material, including wall instructions empagsizing numbers and letters. There are still many Indian children that donot got to school, but it is not because there is no classroom spce, it is primarily becase of poverty. There is also an issue with girls.
