Indian Schools: Activities



Figure 1.--Here is a school group visitin the Botanical Garden "Lal Bagh" at Bangalore. The Garden was founded by sultan Haider Ali in the 18th century, but the English colonial government substatially enlarged it. This is a private school group.

We have rather limited information on Indian school activities at this time. Of course msnyschool activities are standard or similar all around the world. Readers in India have provided some information. We note children involved in a range of school activities. We see students coming and going to school. Most children walk to school, but there were many other ways. And there are some unquely Indian ways of getting to school. Secondary school stuydets were less likely to live in walking distance of their school. We see children in their classrooms. Here there is quite a range of classrooms, including some still very basic classrooms in rural schools. Childen take field trips to local sites like temples and parks. And their are school sports as well as well as singing and dancing. Here we aee a happy school group on a field trip to the Bangalore bontanical gardens.

Coming and Going to School

We see students coming and going to school. Most children walk to school, especially primary school children. There are many other ways of course and some And there are some unquely Indian ways of getting to school. Secondary school stuydets were less likely to live in walking distance of their school. School busses are not very common. And only a few children are driven to school in the family car. For some reason, bycycles do not seem all that common. We notice quite a number of jitnies, especially at private schools. And there are ox carts even in the city.

Classroom Activities

We see children in their classrooms. Here there is quite a range of classrooms, including some still very basic classrooms in rural schools.

Field Trios

Childen take field trips to local sites like temples and parks. And their are school sports as well as well as singing and dancing. Here we aee a happy school group on a field trip to the Bangalore bontanical gardens.
