Brazilian German schools

Figure 1.--This photo was taken in Joinville, Santa Catarina State, Brazil (1931). This southern state was part of the so-called Gaucho Republic. The city has a large community of German descendants. Many families belong to the Lutheran Church. The photo shows a class of the Deutsche Schule (German School). Notice the attache-style book bags. They were different from rhe back ack syle more common than in Germany. It was a bilingual German-Portuguese school. The school still functions in Brazil.

Most of the boys are barefoot. The boys look like first graders, in part because one of the boys does not yet have his hair cut. There seem to be a few sailor suits. . Notice the attache-style book bags. They were different from rhe back ack syle more common than in Germany. Only some of the vboys had them. It was a bilingual German-Portuguese school. The school still functions in Brazil.
