We note numerous Australian school photographs from the early- 20th century. We note single gender and coed schools in Australa. Primary schools could be mixed, but secondary schools were usually single gender schools. Small rural schools could be mixed. City chools were often single gender schools. Coeducation in Australia has a 160-year history, driven primarily by financial necessity rather than educational philosophy. While the 1860s saw Victoria pioneer mixed-gender government schools to save costs in rural areas. Early state secondary schools in Victoria were generally coeducational. We note an unidentified school with both boysand girls, but the two genders are kept apart. The boys in 1900s school photographs look much like English boys, so much so that it is difficult to distinguish them, although the background sometimes suggests the location. We note both schools that wore uniforms and others that do not. Early in the century some boys wore sailor suits. Peaked school caps and flat caps were common. In Britain the peaked cap was much more common than the flat cap. And we note a few boys wearing boaters. Eton collars were very common until after the War. Boys tended to wear suits to schhool, but not necesarily uniforms. Norfolk suits were popular. Boys commonly wore knee pants and knickers, except for some of the older boys at secondary schools. Many boys went barefoot, especially at the primary schools. This was in part seasonal. Boys were more likely to wear long stockings and shoes during the coller months. Girls commonly wore elaborate hats and pinafores.
