This 1906 photograph shows the Cloverdale School school and students. Cloverdale is a tiny rural cmmuniy community in norhwest Orgon, close to Washington and the Pacific Ocean. The unicorported community was founded (1884). A post office was establihed (1899). A few years latter a school was built. It is a small, but modern looking school with windows providing lighing most small rural schools liked. A few of the boys wear overalls, a garment which rural boys for some reason were just beginnng to wear to school. Overalls became popular in the 19th century. We do not see boys wearing them to school to any extent until the turn-of-the cenury. This is one of the earliest images we have archived showing boys wearing overalls to school. Also noticeable is how many boys are wearing long pants. At he ime, knee pants were standard in America, but not nearly as wide spread in rural areas sthey were in ciies.
