Figure 1.--Teachers in the 19th century were mostly men, except for dame schools. As public education expanded, school districts sought to save money by hiring young, umarried women who were willing to work for less money than men. One they go married, hiwever, they had to resign. It was expected that married women should devote their attention to their husbanfs, home keeping, and children. Here we have a snapshot of a teacher's class at the El Monte which she took after resigining in 1903.

She wrote on the back of the snap shot which was printed as a cabinet card. "Flora from Ida. My room at El Monte, taken soon after I resigned to be married in 1903." The children look to be about 10-11 years old. We see the boys wearing blouse, sailor suits, suits, and overalls. Notice only one boy wears overalls. For some reasdomn they were not yet very common at schools. Children still tended to dress up for school. Many boys are barefoot, based on the boys in the first row. The girls wear dresses and hair bows. White dresses seem popular. Unlike the boys they wear long stockings and shoes.
