U.S. School Clothes: Farm Security Administration School (Weslaco, Texas)

Figure 1.-- Schools in the United States are the responsibility of state and local government. There are a few exceptions such as on Native American reservations and military posts, especially posts overseas for dependants. The Farm Security Administration was a New Deal Agency and during the Depression seems to have set up schools at some of its community projects. We have some information on the FSA, but not much on its schools yet. Here we have a photograph from the FSA school in Weslaco, Texas during 1942. Source: Library of Congress LC-USF33- 003657-M3.

By thus time the focus of the Roosevelt was not on limiting farm production to hold up prices. This changes with outbrrak of World War II and the opposite policy was oursued. The Govrnment began to promote and assust farmerrs to increase farm output. Weslaco is in the far south of Texas. It seems that the weather is udually warm even during the winter. Here we see these children going to school barefoot even in February.
