Individual U.S. School: Grant School (Unknown State, 1939)

Grant School
Figure 1.--This photoback postcard identifies the school, only it is difficult to read. We think it is the Grant School, but the writing at the lowerright hand cornr is difficult to read. Let us know if you can make out the writing any better. It is a city school. We can see their substantial brick school in the background. The group looks to be 3rd Grade class (8-year olds). Striped 'T'-shirts were popular. It looks to us as if the school was in the South because of the number of boys wearing short pants. Shorts were not as common in northern schools. This makes us doubt that that the name of the school was Grant. Because of the Civil War you don't see schools named Lincoln and Grant in the South

None of the boys were wearing knickers which were declining in popularity, but still worn in the 1930s. One boy wears long pants. Another boy wears overalls. We note boys wearing sneakers. We were a little surprised by this because when I started school in 1949, I don't recall many boys wearing sneakers to school. We wore sneakers at home for play after school. None of the girls wear sneakers to school. The girls are all wearing dresses with ankle socks.
