U.S. School Clothes: Hardin Elementary School (Youngstown, Ohio)

Hardin Elemetary School
Figure 1.-- Here we have a 1st grade class (we are not sure what C.M. means) meaning 6 year olds. They are at Hardin Elementary School in Youngstown Ohion in 1948. The photograph here was taken on a cold day. We get to see see a lot of headwear and coats. The boys wear a lot of peaked caps. That was a kind of dress cap boys wore at the time. The girls wear prim hats. One child wears a Scottish Glengarry, we think a girl.

Youngstown is located on the Mahoning River in northeastern Ohio, roughly situated midway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Youngstown became an industrial center based on first local coal deposits and then a major steel manufacturing center. The Erie Canal and canals into Ohio made this possible and was masively epanded with the comong of the railroad. This attracted large numbers of Eastern European workers.
