*** bangs for boys: United States American trends

American bangs
Figure 1.--This boy from Globe, Arizona was photographed with his mother in 1919. He wears a very severe bangs cut. Note how the straight forehead cut and the connection with the hair at the side is very sharp. Note the coastal backdrop, even though Globe is located in Arizona, an inland state. This seems a popular style for younger boys at the time, we are not sure about the boy's age here. We would guess 4-5 years old.

American Bangs: Styles

Bangs were an enormously popular style for both boys and girls and we see them done in several many different basic stylesm but with enumerable refiements. We note many different styles of bangs, but we are not sure about the terms for the different cuts, or in fact if there were proper names for the cuts. Some of the terms we have found are not always a definitive style and have been used variously. Ringlet curl cuts might have front bangs. Many short hair styles were worn with bangs. A popular style in the early-20th century was Dutch-boy bangs with hair at the side down to the ears. A good example here is Floyd Van Horne about 1915. There were many different ways of cutting the bangs. Some were severely cut, straight across the forehead. Othereswere more molded to the shape of the child's head and cut in a kind of curve. There were also different ways of conecting the bangs cur on the forehead to the hair at the suide of the head. In contrast to the more severe bangs cuts, we note much more informal, even shaggy cuts. The rather shaggy bangs of a young John F. Kennedy Jr, in the early 1960s also had an impact on boys' hair styling. When longer hair became popular, we see many boys with page boy cuts.

Terminology

We note many different styles of bangs, but we are not sure about the terms for the different cuts, or in fact if there were proper names for the cuts. Some of the terms we have found are not always a definitive style and have been used variously. Thus many would cateirize the boy's cut here in 1919 as a 'page boy cut'. We also see the term 'Dutch boy cut' in the 1910s-20s. Despite the relatively short length this would be commonly seen as a page/Dutch boy cut. We also notice the term Prince Valiant cut later in the century.

Short Side Hair

Many short hair styles were worn with bangs. Of course short hair is a relative term. Here we mean hair above the ears, often tapred above the ears. The boy here has short hair, but notice the hair at the sides touches the ears and is not tappered (figure 1).

Page/Dutch Boy Cut

A popular style in the early-20th century was Dutch-boy bangs with hair at the side down to or even over the ears. The term 'page boy' of course comes from the medieval pge boys serving in royal courts. Hair syules varied during the medieval era, but there were times when the style was short hair bobbed at the side. This seems to haveen a Norman style in thr late-Middle ages. The term Dutch Boy cut seems to be identical with page boy. We do not know of a stylitic difference, altough we welcome reader input here. This wa an American term, we think relating to a fictionl chracter. It was unknon in the Netherlands. There is also a similrity with the bowl cut except the front bangs and side hair with the page/Dutch cuts are cut to different lengths. Both chrobology and age werefactors here. Younger boys migh have longer side hir like the girls. We see bowl cuts in the 19th century, but Dutch/boy cuts do not seem common. We do see them in the 1910s-20s. A good example here is Floyd Van Horne about 1915. One source suggests that the tyle was popularized for boys by by silent film child star Jackie Coogan. Interestingly, the length of the hair at the side appears to have been longer in illustrations such as ads (Dutch Boy Paints) and the comic (Buster Brown) than suggested by the photographic record. We do see boys with hair over the ears , but theu seem less common that habing the side hair cut at or above the ear. And during the 20th century we begin to see the term 'page boy' being used as a woman's or girls' hair style. This was the same time that the look became popular for girls, albeit with longer side hair. Besides the fahion, it was a much more practical style for girls than longer more practical styles. The page boy style made a fashion come back (1950s). It became the height of fashion for women. And the Beatles introduced it for boys and teenagers (1960s). And the hair at the side got longer as long hair styles begame common. We notice this style reppearing for boys during the 1970s as long hair became stylish. As teenagers wore this style, neigher page boy or Dutch boy was used, at least for school age boys. We do see the term 'Price Valiant' cut being used The term is imprecise as the the length of the side hair which varies from just above the ears to jut above the shoulders. The common length in the 1910s-20s when the page boy cuts were especially popular for younger boys. we think that Dutch Boy bangs wewe becomin ommonly used at the time. We think 'page boy' was becoming more commonly used for girls. We see quite a number of boys this age with similar hair syles. Some times the hair was fuller. By the 30s such cuts for boys were less common. we still see bangs, but the hair above the ears was tapered A good example is an Iowa boy in 1920. Bangs were also a popular style for girls, but not with short hair like the boys. Usually the girls' cut had hair at the side covering their ears.

Fauntleroy Ringlet Curls

Ringlet curl cuts might have front bangs. Bangs were not the only way that ringlet curl styles used for front. They were, however, one of the most common stylistic elements for the front of Faunteroy ringlets were bangs. we see different approche to the bangs, but they were very common. The ringlets were done in many different ways with the front bangs.

Bang Styling

There were many different ways of cutting the bangs for these different terms. Some were severely cut, straight across the forehead. Otheres were more molded to the shape of the child's head and cut in a kind of curve.
