There were various styles of kilt suits, including some destinctive styles. The style of kilt suit is primarily derived from the jacket style, which is diffrent than the jacket type. Surely the The most destinctive was the Fauntleroy kilt suit. The Fauntleroy suit of course was the most destinctibe of all American styles. Fauntleroy outfits were primarily knee pants suits, but we also note dresses and kilt suits. Here we mean the classic cut-away jacket Fauntleroy suits worn with Fauntleroy blouses, but we also note standard jackets with various Faunteroy trim items. Both were used with kilt suits. We also see various stles of sailor-styled kilt suits. We notice quite a few sailor-styled kilt suits in the photographic record. We also notice kilt suits done with Eton collars. Here various jackets were used. In addition we standard suit jackets being used. This was a type of suit, but there were styling differences. Jackets were styled like standard lapel (sack) suit jackets that boys wore with pants. This included both single- and double-breasted jackets as well as other styles.

Heretherecwas an age difference. Actual Fauntlery outfits were very popular for boys of kilt suit age. We see them in the 1880s and 90s, but they passed out of style in the 1900s as the kilt suit was also going out of style.
We also see various stles of sailor-styled kilt suits. We notice quite a few sailor-styled kilt suits in the photoggraphic record. Sailor styling was one of the most popular styles for boys by the 1880s. We first see them in the 1870s, but they do not seem to be very common until the 80s. The sailor suit was most popular for school age boys, but we see quitev a few sailor-styled kilt suits in the photographic record. Sailor suits appeared before Fauntleroy suits, but both became a major style at about the same time in the 1880s. Klit suits appeared, however, in number eralier, during the 1870s. We notice an endless variety of sailor styling. This was in part because, sailor suits were quite varied until after the turn-of-the century when we begfin to see mostly traditional styled suits. By thus time the kilt suit was passing out of stykle.
We also notice kilt suits done with Eton collars. we think that proper Eton collars meaning large stiff collars, presumably detachable collars, appeared in the 1880s. This needs to be confirmed and we are working on it as HBC expands. We see Eton shaped collars earlier, but not the large classic Eton collrs. Mothers also began adding large floppy bows in the 1880s. Various jackets were used with Eton collars. There were no specilized jackets worn with Eton collars, but these collars do give a destinctive look. And they became more popular than Eton collars after Mrs. Burnett published her book (1885). The same of course is true of Fauntleroy collars because thee collars are such striking stylistic elements. The kilt suit jackets worn with Eton collars is a topic we have only begun to investigate.
Highland kilt outfits were done with black military style jackets. We rarely see American kilt suits with these jackets. Standard suit jackets were much more common. we have found a few such examples. They are not Highlnd kilt outfits though because e do not se any of the accotements of a Highland outfit like a sporan, shoulder plaid, and Argyle knee socks. And the kilts being worn or more like skirts without the features of real kilts. Highland kilt outfits were never worn with long stoickings. American boys wearing kilt suits almost always wore long stickings. Of course the jacket and kilt are the major kilt outfit items, so when wearing the military jacket, a boy's outfir does look like a Highland kilt outfit.
We see kilt suits done with both what look like standard suit jackets and jackets cut especially as kilt suits. This was a type of suit, but there were styling differences in the jackets. Jackets were styled like standard lapel (sack) suit jackets that boys wore with pants. This included both single- and double-breasted jackets as well as other styles. We think some of the stanbdard cut jakets may be a little shorter than the pnts worn with kne pants. This we are still trying to assess. We also se jackets tht were cut differently than standard suit jackets. Here there were different cuts. We are just befinnung to assess the different types of kilt suit jckets cuts.
