Unidentified American Boy (About 1900-05)

Figure 1.-- Here we see the unidentified boy wearing a sailor outfit with modest Fauntleroy trim. He has a button-up sailor blouse which he wears with a dickie that does not have any embroidered design. Hecwears a white collkar wuith it,perhps an Eton collr, with a colorful floppy bow. The wriist trim has what look like calloped edges. The matching knee oants are shorter than was commpn. He has dark long stickings ahd high-top shoes which were fairly standard at the time. He looks to be about 9 years old here.

Here we have two cabinet card portraits of an unidentified boy. All we know for sure is that he came from Somerville,Massachusettes because the two portaits were taken there at about the same time atvthe cFreeman studio. We cknow this because of the similarityb of the mounts. Based on the mounts, we would guess they were taken in the very ealy v190ss,proibably about 1900-05. We think both portraits are of the sane boys, but it is possible that they were brothers. We think this is not the case because the two are dressed so differently, but this is a possibility/ The age rage is about 8-10 years. The two portraits may havec been taken a year or so apart showing the boy wearing adifferent outfit. As he came from a well-to-do family, he presumably had several differehnt outfits. Apparently mother wanted portraits in is different outfits.

Fauntleroy Suit

Most available Fauntleroy images were formal studio nportrait. We are less sure just when and where the boys involved wore these suits other than for formal portraits. This unidetified boy wears a standard double-breasted jacket, but with a very fancy Fauntelroy blouse. He also wears what looks to be silk long stockings with ptent-leather pumps. Curiously we note a portrait by the sane studio of this same boy in a plainer outfit a year or so before this portrait was taken, at least we think he was younger. Perhaps readers will have some thoughts here. Perhaps this is a brother, but we would have thought brothers would have been dressed more similarly.
