Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: Age 10 Years

Figure 1.-- -This cabinent card was a "Platinograph". It shows a brotherahd sister, probably in the 1890s. They both wear frilly outfits. The boy wears a classic cut-away velve Fauntleroy suit suit with a fancy blouse. The children are not identified, but the boy looks to be about 10 years old. This would have been their party outfits. The portrair was by Ollivier in Brooklyn.

Fauntleroy suits were mostly worn by younger boys, but we have also noticed noted a small number of older boys wearing them as well. These examples are much less common in the photographic record which we thinks the general prevalence among boys at the time. The Faunrleroy suit was much less common with older boys, especially the classic Fauntleroyvsuit. What we do see with the older boys is Fauntleroy elements like large collars and floppy bows. Boys at 10 years and even older boys might wear a basic Fauntleroy blouse, but we see only a few boys at this age wearing the really fancy ones. Images of boys wearing the classic Fauntleroy suits by about age 10 are not very common. Ready-made Fauntleroy suits were not made in sizes for 10 year olds, at least that we have found to date. We see the blouses, but not the suits. We do note portraits of boys who look to be 10 years old, so we know some boys wore them. Just where they wore them is an interesting question. We do not see them at school. There were some possible reasons for this. Wealthy boys might not attend school and were insread tutored at school, although this was becoming less common by the 1890s. Other boys might haveattended school in other clothes, but just worn their Fauntleroy suits for special occassions. They seem to have been worn for church, parties ,or other special occassions. They would have had to be handcsewn, probably at a millenary where mother had her dresses made. We suspect that the boys involved would have come from a well-to-do family. It was mostly fashionable ladies like Mrs. Burnett that still dressed boys at age 10 in Fauntleroy suits. These boys might have been tutored at home. Much more common for 10-year olds was wearing more mature suits, but with Fauntleroy touches added like lace or ruffled collars and cuffs and floppy bows. We note the blouses done both with and without matching cuffs. An example of a boy wearing a Fauntlroy blouse without matching cuffs is an unidentified boy, we think in the late-1890s. It is not clear if the blouse originslly had the fancy cuffs.

Prevalence

Fauntleroy suits were mostly worn by younger boys, but we have also noticed noted a small number of older boys wearing them as well. These examples are much less common in the photographic record which we thinks the general prevalence among boys at the time. The Faunrleroy suit was much less common with older boys, especially the classic Fauntleroyvsuit. f boys wearing the classic Fauntleroy suits by about age 10 are not very common. Ready-made Fauntleroy suits were not made in sizes for 10 year olds, at least that we have not foybd them to date in period catalogs 1880s, 1890s, and 1900s). We see the blouses, but not the suits.

Fauntleroy Styling

What we do see with the older boys is Fauntleroy elements like large collars and floppy bows. Boys at 10 years and even older boys might wear a basic Fauntleroy blouse, but we see only a few boys at this age wearing the really fancy ones. Blouses with wide collars and a little ruffled trim were fairly common. We see boys wearing them with and without jackets. The really fany blouses with real lace both at the collarand diwn the front and at the wrists were not as common for 10 year olds. We see a few examples, but not very many.

Usage

We do note portraits of boys who look to be 10 years old, so we know some boys wore them. But because the family snapshot did not appear in large numbers until 1900, and at first were almost etirely outdoors images, we do not know where and when the boys wore them. Just where they wore them is an interesting question. We do not see 10-year olds wearing Fayntleroy suits to school. We know this because the schoolportrait had become fairly common by the time of the Fauntleroy craze. We do not see them at schoolt, at least with older boys. Some younger boys might come to schgool with some Fauntleroy elements. HBC has a fairly extensive school section: 1880s, 1890s, 1900s. There were some possible reasons for this. Wealthy boys might not attend school and were insread tutored at home. Ans at age 10 it would have been mostly boys from weakthy bfamilies wearing Fauntleroy suits. Tutoring children at home, however, was becoming less common by the 1890s. Other boys might have attended school in plainer clothes and just worn their Fauntleroy suits for special occassions. Fauntleroyb suits seem to have been worn for church, parties, or other special occassions. Here the photigraphic record is less available. Only when when the family snapshot becomes more prounounced by the 1910s that we begin to get large numbers of images of events like church, paries and weddings. And byv this time the Fauntleroy ceaze had largely disappeared,

Availability

They would have had to be hand sewn, probably at a millenary where mother had her dresses made. We notice Merle Pontius. He looks to be about 10-years old. While the suit was probanly ready made, the fancy Fauntlerou blouse may have to be made to order. Here we are not entirely sure.

Social Class

We suspect that the boys involved would have come from a well-to-do family. It was mostly fashionable ladies like Mrs. Burnett that still dressed boys at ahe 10 in Fauntleroy suits. The boy might have been tutored at home.

Suits

The classic Fauntleroy suit was not worn by boys boys at this age. What 10-year olds did wear was more mature suits, but with Fauntleroy touches added like lace or ruffled collars and cuffs and floppy bows. We note the blouses done both with and without matching cuffs. An example of a boy wearing a Fauntlroy blouse without matching cuffs is an unidentified boy, we think in the late-1890s. It is not clear if the blouse originally had the fancy cuffs.
