Movie Review: The Island (United States, 1980)

Figure 1.-- Jeffrey Frank played Justin in the 1980 movie "The Island" Justin and his reporter father are captured by 20th century retograde pirates. Here if I recall correctly the pirate leader was trying o get Justin to shoot his father.

While investigating strange occurrences in the Bermuda Triangle, a journalist and his son are captured by an isolated, 400-year old pirate tribe. The film is based on aPeter Benchly novel. The pirate leader (David Warner) and his band raid yachts and sail boats of wealthy people vacationing in the Caribbean. A reporter (Michael Caine) ventures into the Caribbean to investigate the disappearing boats in the Bermuda Triangle. He runs across Warner and his band of raiders and they decide to induct them into their tribe. The reporter's son is Justin (Jeffrey Frank) is 12-years old. The film becomes a bit gruesome. I liked the beginning as you got to know Justin a bit as a real boy. The costuming is absurd. Inexplicably, even though Justin is with his dad on a steamy tropical island, he wears long pants. You can tell it is an American picture. The film was not well received and was not a commercial success. The strange thing is that by the 1980s, short pants had become popular with American boys.
