young woman's battle to win custody of her late sister's child from her homicidal brother-in-law's family.

In Love and War - (US, 1958)

Compelling drama about the personal lives and war experiences of a Marine platoon. One of the marines has a little brother about 7 or 8. He wears jeans, I think he was a Disney standard, but do not recall his name at this time.

In Love With Life - (US, 1934)

Dickie Moore

In Search of a Golden Sky - (US)

In the Fall -

Figure 1.--"In Which We Serve" is an important British World War II movie made during the peak of the War. Thevfilm is the story of a ship, the British destroyer HMS Torrin which is sunk. The film views the lives of various sailors and their service on a destroyer. One of the first scenes is in the Captain's home. He has a son, about 10 or so.

In Which We Serve - (UK, 1942)

"In Which We Serve" is an important British World War II movie made during the peak of the War. Thevfilm is the story of a ship, the British destroyer HMS Torrin which is sunk. Britain at the time was threatened by the U-boat campaign in the North Atlantic. Aftervthe ship is sunk, the plot unfolds as flash backs by survivors as they cling to a life raft. Noel Coward who plays the captain won an Academy Award Winner. The film views the lives of various sailors and their service on a destroyer. One of the first scenes is in the Captain's home. He has a son, about 10 or so. The boy has only a few lines. He wears a suit, certainly with shorts, but as he is at the dinner table they are not shown. He appears later in a picnic scene in shorts and at home in shorts with knee socks. Quite a polite boy who still says "mummy" when talking to his mom. The cast includes John Mills and Richard Attenborough.

Incompresso, L'incompris (Italy, 1966)

Incident in a Small Town - (US, 1994)

The trial of a boy's mother and grandfather for the murder of the father. The boy (Nick Stahl) is about 13-14 and is an effective little actor. It is set in the south during the late 1940s. A few boys are seen in shorts, but the central character wears longs until the very last scene in which he appears in long, baggy shorts.

(The) Incredible Sarah - (UK, 1976)

Movie about the life of the incredible Sarah Bernhart. Good film with some all to brief shots of her son Maurice. Strangely, he is first depicted (not counting as a baby) as a boy about 8 years old in a rather ordinary knickers suit. Next he is seen in fancy suits and long hair. One outfit was a white sailor suit. He comes skipping into the parlor demanding that one of Sarah's men friends play with him. In another scene he wears a suit with black stockings and rides his pony into the house. In another he has a large white collar, with long pants. He wasn't a little boy either, he looked to be about 11-13, depending on his appearance, although the scenes are too short to really tell. His outfits are some of the most sissy ever depicted in the movies for a boy his age. He has only brief appearances in a few scenes, hardly worth viewing the entire picture. Apparently in real life, she did spoil her son rotten. I don't know, however, how accurate the costuming was, but given the times a child from a wealthy theatrical family could have well been dressed in those styles.

(The) Incubus - (US, 1982)

A physician and a priest investigate the dreams of a Wisconsin boy who is convinced that he is possessed by demons who are terrorizing his town.

Indistretion - (US, 1958?)

This is an American film. I'm not sure about the date, probably the mid to late 1950s. It is rather a long drawn out, boring film. It is of some interest because it is set in a Rome train station and in the course of the film we see all sorts of people moving back and forth. The people appear to be wearing their own clothes. Thus we see quite a few outfits being worn by Italian children. There is a crocodile of school boys, I think wearing cloaks. In a train compartment a family has several boys, all wearing short pants suits. The film is set in winter with the adults wearing overcoats. There is a group of older Boy Scouts with wide brimmed hats. They wear shorts, some with dark and others wth white kneesocks. A poor family has three boys two wearing shorts and another boy wearing knickers. This is a working-class family whose father is a coal miner returrning from England where he has been laid off.

(The) Indian in the Cupboard - (US, 1995)

Lovely little movie about a boy about Omri (Hal Scardino), a 9-year old Brooklyn boy, receives a beat up old chest as a birthday present from one of his teenage brothers. It turns out to be a magical chest that brings his play figures alive. They teach him about history, bravery, and racism. The main character wears shorts. His best friend, Patrick (Rishi Bhat), gives him the toy Indian figure.

Indian Paint - (US, 1964)

A young Indian boy shares a series of adventures with his beloved white pony. Johnnie Crawford played the boy. He was also the boy in the popular western, The Rifleman.

Figure 2.--River Phoenix plays a young Indiana Jondes in the Boy Scouts. He is shown here wearing the traditional Scout hat introduced by Baden Powell.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - (US, 1989)

Typical rockem-sockem adventure film. It begins with a young Indy, played by River Phoenix, as part of a Boy Scout troop. Some of the Scouts wear shorts--albeit long ones. Most early American Scours wore knickers. Tere is, however, little about Scouting in the film. River would have been 17 or 18 years old when he made this film. The setting of the movie would have been in the early 1930s. The heart shaped insignia on his shirt indicates he was a "Life Scout", a rank just below "Eagle Scout". The Hitler Youth is also depicted in the film.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom --

Indochine (France, 1992)

This French film is a passionate love story that the French do so well. It was directed by Régis Wargnier. A French mother and her adopted daughter fall in love with a soldier. The two fall in love with the same soldier. The film is set in French colonial Indochina (modern Vietnam). The film received the 2004 Academy Award for the best foreign film. It was shot on location in Vietnam, Malaysia and Switzerland. The film starts in 1930 before World War II. Many French colonials lived their entire lives in Indochina and never even visited France. The French colonial regime gave the French enormous advantages in Indochina. The Vienamese were turning increasingly nationalistic and Marxist ideas were becoming influential. The movie centers on Eliane whose father owns and operates a lrge rubber plantation. Attending an auction, she meets a French military officer--Jean-Baptiste She has an affair with him but then rejects him. Her adopted daughter Camille then falls in love with the same officer. Eliane acts to stop the fair, or so she thinks. The film is well costumed and some boys are seen.

Information Kid - (US, 1932)

Mickey Rooney

(The) Inheritance - (UK,1948)

A wicked uncle and evil governess conspire to cheat a young girl (16 years old) out of her inheritance. A little village boy, Tom (Robin Netsch?), has a small part. It is set in Victorian England. Tom wears longs.

(The) Inheritors - (Austria?/German?, 1984)

Nikolas Vogel, Roger Schauer. A controversial movie with a 15-year old boy caught up in Europe's growing neo-NAZI youth movement. Provocative recreation of true events. The Inheritors was produced and directed by Walter Bannert. Set during the cold war years of West Berlin, The Inheritors is the story of one 16-year old boy named Thomas Feigl, who, feeling alienated by his disfunctional family, befriends a young thief he happens upon one day. This bicycle thief, Charly, then introduces Thomas to his friends who belong to a rising neo-nazi youth group. At first, Thomas is skeptical about his new friends, but confrontations at home and in school motivate him to hurtle himself towards the only group of people that want him around, a place where he can gain power. Soon Thomas is handling out propaganda flyers at NAZI rallys, which are covered on the television where his family and classmates see him, but Thomas is a true believer to the cause. He won't allow his mother to bully him like she does his feckless father and brother, nor does he allow his schoolmates to taunt him. But as his family disintegrates after the suicide of his brother, so too does this new Nazi party. The political party separates itself from the neo-militants in an attempt to gain a voice in the forthcoming elections; while the miltants retreat to their newly established training camp. Thomas follows the militants, and Charly (who's home life is even more intolerable than Thomas'). At the boot camp, Thomas learns how to fire weapons and how to kill. Thomas accompanies Charly to his home in the wake of his sister's rape at the hands of their father. Thomas and Charly hunt the man down at the father's favorite bar; Charly's father beats the boy to the ground. Thomas withdraws a gun from his jeans and shoots the man dead. The Inheritors shows two distinct class of boys, the upper middle class (Thomas) and the lower class (Charley). Thomas and his brother wear jeans, tennis shoes, dark socks, pullover tops or T-shrts, both are seen at least once wearing white button-down shirts under pull-over sweaters. Not much different than American boy clothes at the time. Charly basically wears jeans and t-shirt until they are both he and Thomas are at boot camp, where they wear fatigues of a dark gray. At a rally for the political leaders, their are two bands of boys with drum, trumpet and fifes. One side of boys represents classical Germany: white shirts and grey waistcoats, grey knee britches and white stockings. The second line of band members all wear khaki colored dress fatigues. Some members of the youth group wear long leather coats and black pants akin to Gestapo. Although made in 1984, the movie's theme trandscends the trappings of time, for the politcal/social dynamics haven't changed all that much since. It is a cautionary tale.

(The) Inner Circle - (???, 1991)

A naive young man is forced to choose between family and state in Stalinist Russia. A rather depressing movie, but well made. Children of arrested parents are put in sterile orphanages. The film show how they are admitted, stripped, bathed, hair shorn and all personal effects taken away. The children in an early scene are very young. Older children are shown a few years later. The focus is on a little girl, but both boys and girls appear to be wearing little bloomer-leg sun suits, strangely under rain coats. In one scenes flowers are presented to Stalin. The boys wear shorts with long stockings. Unfortunately there are only a few scenes with the children.

(An) Innocent Love - (US, 1981)

A 14 year old mathematics genius (Doug McKeon) and a 19-year old All-American female basketball player become involved in an unusual romance.

(The) Innocent - (UK, 19??)

Lovely little made for TV movie. A Yorkshire boy suffering from epilepsy experiences his first love, who is a bit of a tease. She does things to embarrass him, like skinny dipping. In one scene he has a fit. He wakes up at home in front of a fire, undressed but wrapped in a blanket with her by his side. The locals think he should be put away and do not understand his sensitivity. He is hurt by an affair by his widowed mother who he discovers in bed with one of the few adults that understand him. He wears shorts and longs and is about 13.

(The) Innocent - (US, 1994)

A police lieutenant must learn to communicate with an autistic boy whose drawings may hold the key to a crime.

(The) Innocents - (UK/US, 1961/62)

Classic movie version of the Henry James supernatural thriller, "The Turn of the Screw." A Governess must contend with two enchanting children who she realizes are possessed with ghosts. The girl appears in a dress with pantaletts and later in a classic pinafore. Miles, who is well played by Martin Stephens, has very ordinary costumes. While a generally well-done film, there is little attention to the boys' costume, in contrast to the girl's costume. Miles appears once in knickers, but usually wears longs. Even his night dress is nondescript. I did not see the movie through to the end, but I doubt if the costumes get interesting. Surely a boy his age at the time would have worn a sailor suit or velvet suit. The movie is set in the latter part of the 19th century. The director made the movie without explaining the plot to the children, they were only told it was a ghost story and each day's shootings were only explained at the beginning of the session. When they were finished, the children could not view the film because of Britain's strict rating system.

Inside Out -

International Velvet - (US, 1978)

What a disappointment this was. It is a sequel to "National Velvet". A British aunt assumes responsibility for her niece (Tatum O'Neal) who was raised in America. She soon has her decked out in her school girl outfit and off to school. She attends a local village school, every boy wears long pants--rather unlikely in 1978. Several scenes are shot at the school.

Into the West - (US/Ireland?, 1993)

The film derived from Celtic myth and American westerns chronicles the adventures of two young brothers. Much of it is shot in the Dublin slums. Tito (Ciaran Fitzgerald) is 8 and Ossie (Ruaidhri Conroy) is 12 and they have lost their mother and are nearly orphaned by their father. The boys are charming little pug-nosed ragamuffins. Members of a gypsy clan (the Travellers), they give up their colorful life for a dreary Dublin flat in a housing project. A white horse (Tir na nOg) symbolizing freedom and beauty appears to lead the adorable urchins on a hair raising chase.

Intruder - (US, 1981)

A mysterious stranger bestows an unusual power on a young boy. Jimmy Douglas

(The) Intruder - (US/Italy)

A boy is picked up by his step father at his Catholic boarding school in Italy. He wears a suit. He also wears a strange plaid hat and matching tie, perhaps a clumsy attempt to create a school uniform. The boy (Mieriel Darch) is 11 years old, a pleasant looking boy with a winning smile. He wears glasses. He has a rather appealing personality. As best I can tell he wears longs, but he soon changes out of his suit. His father is driving him to Paris where his mother is. His mother's former husband (perhaps his father) is stalking them.

Intruder in the Dust - (US, 1949)

A boy (Claude Jarmen Jr.) and a lawyer come to the aid of a black man accused of murder. Good dramatic film which received good reviews. Based on a William Faulkner novel.

Intruders - (US, 1992)

Made for TV series. Mary's flash backs expand to her young son.

Invaders from Mars - (US, 1953)

Freckle-faced Daniel, about 12 or so, sees a flying soccer land in a rural town where scientific research is being conducted. He is the only one to realize that the Martians are invading. The Martians suck humans in below the ground and then put them under their control. Wounds are visible behind their heads. I've seen the boy before, but don't know his name. He wears longs throughout.

Invaders from Mars - (US, 1986)

A boy is the only one to realize that the Martians are invading. This may be a mistaken entry based on the above or a remake.

Figure 3.--Richard Eyer as the invisible boy wears typical American kid clothes during the 1950s. Notice how he has cuffed his jeans.

Invisible Boy - (US, 1957)

If this is the movie I am thinking of it deals with an invisible boy and robots. He irritates his parents who I think are upset with his experiments, so he is spanked while he is invisible--one would think a difficult undertaking. The film stars Richard Eyer who also co-starred in "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" as Timmie Merrino. "The Invisible Boy" featured Robbie the Robot from the movie, "Forbidden Planet" (1957). The boy's father (Philip Abbott) is a scientist, with a secret laboratory secreted in his house, where he shows Timmie the dis-assembled robot parts he "brought back from the future" through his time machine. Dr. Merrinoe is working with other scientists on a "super-computer," and so the bored boy assembles the robot and they have a few adventures (the robot makes the boy invisible, his form of playing). Timmie introduces Robbie to the super-computer, which turns evil. The massive computer goes awry in its attempt to control the world because it fails to comprehend the power of human beings. Boy and robot then help saved the world. I think Timmie wore dark long trousers and white (or light color) shirts. A HBC reader writes, "I remember seeing this film a few times as a boy, and I loved it back then. Back In Chicago, Illinois there was a television program on Sundays called "Family Classics", that showed nothing but family films during Sunday Afternoons, hosted by Frazier Thomas (A local celebrity at the time 1970s-80s). This is where I saw the Lassie films and most Disney films. I always wanted to see this film, but it was never shown as often as more popular Disney fare. And I nearly forgot about it (as I had the title), until I stumbled across a reference to it from my search of Sinbad films."

Io Sono con Te / I Am with Thee (Italy, 2010)

The Italian movie "Io sono con te" (I am with thee) was directed in 2010 by Guido Chiesa. The title was from a beautiful passafge from the Old Testament book of Isaiah. "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. [Isaiah 41:10] The moviue is, however, set in the New Testament. It is the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary is of course in the Catholic tradition one of the most revered figures in the Bible. The film is somewhat unudual in the film depections of Mary. Mary is depicted as a rather young teenager at the time she gave birth to Jesus. Although some what shocking to us today with our modern mindset, this is historically accurate. At the time girls got married just after puberty, sometime after the age of 12 years. Boys also married early, although usually a little later than girls. They had to be old enough to support a family.

Iron Eagle - (US, 1986)

The teenage son of a fighter pilot downed in the Middle East tries to rescue him. Jason Gedrick.

(The) Iron Major - (US, 1943)

Rather maudlin Pat O'Brien film, but he has a great family of 4 or 5 boys. One boy appears in a short pants sailor suit. In some scenes they are pictured all done up in above the knees knickers suits, one with a middy blouse. Often they have on large white collar with floppy bows. In one scene a small boy in a fancy suit who finds Pat sparking with his girl, forces him to pay a bribe before he will go away.

Isadora - (US, 1969)

The fact-based account of the career and turbulent life of the career and personal life of modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan. Good performances, but rather rambling with poor continuity. I think there are some interesting scenes concerning her son or dance classes. I recently saw the end of the film, but there was no boys' costume depictions. The classes depicted in the Soviet Union appeared to be all girls prancing about in red frocks.

(The) Island - (US, 1980)

While investigating strange occurrences in the Bermuda Triangle, a journalist and his son are captured by an isolated, 400-year old pirate tribe. The film is based on aPeter Benchly novel. The pirate leader (David Warner) and his band raid yachts and sail boats of wealthy people vacationing in the Caribbean. A reporter (Michael Caine) ventures into the Caribbean to investigate the disappearing boats in the Bermuda Triangle. He runs across Warner and his band of raiders and they decide to induct them into their tribe. The reporter's son is Justin (Jeffrey Frank) is 12-years old. The film becomes a bit gruesome. I liked the beginning as you got to know Justin a bit as a real boy. The costuming is absurd. Inexplicably, even though Justin is with his dad on a steamy tropical island, he wears long pants. You can tell it is an American picture. The film was not well received and was not a commercial success.

Figure 4.--"The Island on Bird Street" is a moving film about a boy who has to survive on his own in Warsaw ghetto after it has been cleared by the NAZIs. His father has told him to wait for his return and the boy learns to be quite resourceful in doing so, living in bombed out apartment building.

(The) Island on Bird Street (?, 1997)

The Island on Bird Street is a moving film about a boy who has to survive on his own in Warsaw ghetto after it has been cleared by the NAZIs. His father has told him to wait for his return and the boy learns to be quite resourceful in doing so, living in bombed out apartment building and surviving (mostly) on his own, along with his pet mouse. It is based on a true story. Jordan Kiziuk, 11, is outstanding in the role, demonstrating a fine ability to convey a wide range of emotions. His costuming consists of a heavy shirt, long baggy pants, long stockings and a heavy coat shirt sweater and scaft and a black floppy cap. The costuming looked very authentic throughout the film on kids and adults. The movie is interesting and touching, if a bit unbelievable at times. It won a few film festival awards and young Jordan, who is English, won an American Daytime Emmy award.

Island Sons (US, 1987)

Hawaii serves as a backdrop for the story of four brothers who attempt to maintain the family dynasty after the father's mysterious disappearance. I haven't seen this and am unsure if the brothers are depicted as children.

Islands in the Stream - (US, 1977)

The Hemingway novel about the novelist who must reveal his hidden identity when his three sons visit him in Cuba. The most autobiographical of all the Hemingway novels. The boys wear shorts, but not dressy ones with their suits. When they appear in their boarding school they wear longs. The younger two are pictured at about 10 and 12. I recognized the two, but am not sure of their names. The boys only appear in the first segment of the film and at the very end.

It Came Upon A Midnight Clear - (US, 1984)

A retired detective dies before he can fulfill his Christmas promise to his grandson played by Scott Grimes. Scott plays his part rather nicely. The grandfather strikes a heavenly bargain to return so he can fulfil his promise.

It Figures -

It Happened at the World's Fair - (US, 1963)

While baby sitting a Chinese moppet, two bush pilots find romance at the Worlds Fair. A blond boy (Kurt Russel) who was about 10 appeared in his first movie. He wears contemporary long trousers in the parts I have seen.

It Happened in New Orleans -

It Happened to Jane - (US, 1959)

Comedy about a mother entering the lobster business and her struggle with a railroad tycoon. She has at least one son, but I don't remember how he was dressed. Teddy Rooney.

It Happens Every Thursday - (US, 1953)

Uninspired little comedy about a family publishing a small-town newspaper. They have a son about 9 or 10. He appears in longs--usually jeans. The father comes marching down the stairs in a short pants scoutmaster uniform. A pack of cub scouts (presumably the son was in the pack) subsequently appear, all togged out in the full uniform, including caps, shorts, and knee socks with bands at the top. They were accompanied by a boy scout, also wearing the short pants uniform. This was in the old days when actual scout uniforms were used. I think there is now some sort of legal ruling now where movies and TV need permission to use the uniforms, so often quasi-scout uniforms are used. At any rate, although the scene is very brief, the appearance of cubs in shorts and knee socks is rather unusual in American films. Interestingly while films with American boy scouts in shorts are fairly common, films with cubs in shorts are rather rare.

It Nearly Wasn't Christmas - (US, 1989)

A determined 8-year old enlists the aid of a con man, an over-sized elf, and Santa Clause in an attempt to reunite her family for the holidays.

Figure 5.-- This charming American film, "It Started in Naples", is set in Naples. An American (Clark Cable) falls in love with an Italian (Sofia Loren) who is caring for Clark's surprise nephew, Nando. The boy is 10 years old, but looks a bit younger. He is wonderfully plays a boy with an adorable personality. Gable's film nephew Nando (nickname for Fernando) was played by Marietto Angeletti.

It Started in Naples - (US, 1960)

This charming American film is set in Naples. He played in 6 or 7 other movies during the late 1950s and early 1960s. As far as I know they were Italian filns without important American film runs. Nando usually wears non-discript short shorts which were common in Italy at the time. He plays a charming street-wise kid. There is one scene where he is sent off to school against his will. His aunt hasn't insisted that he go to school, but she pretends she has to show what a good job she is doing in raising him. She sends him for show all smartly decked out in a classic Itlaian school outfit: a blue smock, wide white collar, and red bow. The only other time he is smartly dressed is at the end of the movie when he appears in a long pants suit. The movie was filmed on the Isle of Capri off Naples. In Italy it was entitled "La baia di Napoli" (i.e. Naples Bay).

It's a Living -

Keith Mitchell

It's A Wonderful Life - (US, 1946)

Over-hyped U.S. Christmas classic. There are some kids in George's family, but they only have brief scenes. George does appear as a boy about 12 or so wearing knickers, in one scene with friends who are also in knickers.

It's Great To Be Young

The movie "It's Great To Be Young" was only released on celluloid and shown on television some time ago.

It's Your Move - (Italy/Spain, 1968)

I haven't seen this, but someone mentioned to me that kids are involved, but I'm unsure about the costuming

Ivan and Abraham - (Polish?, 199?)

Two friends, a Jewish and Christian boy, face the ethnic realities of a pre-war Polish shtetl (village). Abraham (Roman Alexandrovitch) and Ivan (Sacha Iakovlev) play their parts beautifully. They look to be 13-15.

Figure 6.--"Ivan’s Childhood" is a Russian film which depicts the German invasion through the eyes of a 12-year old boy. It is a story about a 12 year old boy who chooses to be a soldier when his parents are killed by the NAZIs during World War II.

Ivan's Childhood - (USSR, 1962)

"Ivan’s Childhood" is a Russian film shot in black and White and filmed in 1962. It was directed by Andrei Tarkovskii. The screenplay was written by Vladimir Bogomolov and Mikhail Papava. The film’s soundtrack is in Russian. The film has English subtitles. Ivan was played by Nikolai Burlyayey. The film depicts the German invasion through the eyes of a 12-year old boy. It is a story about a 12 year old boy who chooses to be a soldier when his parents are killed by the NAZIs during World War II. The story begins in the Russian Army barracks. This is an abandoned building the soldiers have taken over. There is dripping water and a sense of dampness as Ivan appears. He is a boy of about 10 or 12. He is dirty and muddy. It transpired that he has returned to the Soviet lines after going on a reconnaissance mission.

Ivanovo Destvo, L'Enfance d'Ivan (USSR, 1962)

Ivory Hunter - (1952)

Set in a nature preserve, a boy has a small part as a game keepers son. He wears shorts and sandals and is about 8-years old.
