Bulgarian Boys' Garments: Sailor Suits--Popularity

Figure 1.--This caninet card portrait shows an unidentified boy in a standard white summer knee pants sailor suit with a fashionable hat. The boy looks to be sbout 20 years old. The portrait was made by V. Velebni in IN Plovdiv, one of Bulagria's major cities. The large format card has a photo 14.3 cm X 7.5 cm. The card is 21 cm X 11.9 cm for the carboard base. The portrait is undated, but looks to have been taken about 1910. Notice the bows on his shoes.

We note Bulgarian boys like boys in other European countries wearing sailor suits. Sailor suits were mostly worn in the cities by the elite and middle-class boys. Some of the boys wearing sailor dsuits clearly came from well-to-do families. This limited the populsarity of the sailor suit in Bulgaria. Bulgaria was a lagely agricultural country intil fter World War II. Sailor suits were not common in the villages and country side where trafitional garments were still worn in the early-20th century. Here the German origins of the country's monarchy must have been a significant factor.
