Individual Mozambique Schools: Tito de Carvalho

Mozambique schools

Figure 1.-This photograph was taken in Beira, Mozambique during 1925. The school Tito de Carvalho meaning Oak Tree. It was a school for local children. We can see that the school was a substantial building. Most of the pupils are wearing sailor-styled blouses, but everybody is barefoot. We don't know if it was required.

This photograph was taken in Beira, Mozambique during 1925. The school Tito de Carvalho. That meanks Oak Tree. Oak of course is a northern hemishphere European species. A reader points out that Carvalho is also a common Potuguese family name, and Tito is a first name. So more likely the school is named after a Portuguese colonial official of some imprtance. We do bnot, however, have any inormation on him. The school was for the local native children. We can see that the school was a substantial building. Most of the pupils are wearing sailor-styled blouses. We suspect that the blouseswere rovided by the school. Uniformns like this were not common in Potugal or the Portuguese Empire. All the children are barefoot which was common in both Portugal and Mozambique. We don't know if it was required. . That is often the case when we see sucb uniformity. We only see boys. We do not know if there was a similar girls schools. The boys seem about the same age. So this may be a single grade level. We are not sure about that either. At this time we are not sure how much of the native populaton attended school. We suspect this was an especially important school. It may have been for the children of the native population employed in the Portugese colonial administration. There may well more schools in Beria. We think that there were few schools in rural areas
