Individual French Schools: Ecole Champagne

Ecole Champagne
Figure 1.--The Ecole Champagne appears to have been a girls school, although there were boys in the maternele class. This appears to be a Catholic school. The girls seem to be wearing dresses rather than smocks. Many of the boys are wearing rompers.

The Ecole Champagne appears to have been a girls school, although there were boys in the maternele class. This appears to be a Catholic school rather than a regular state primary school. We know nothing about the school other than it was operating in 1945. The school may have been located in the town of Champagne. The image here is the complete school. The younger children in the front tow are in the maternelle class. We note many of the boys in the maternelle class during 1945 wearing romper suits. Maternelle was comparable to kindergarden or nursery school. The girls seem to be wearing dresses rather than smocks. Perhaps our French readers will know something about the school. We note boys in maternelle commonly wore smocks, but this became much less common once the boys began regular primary school. A French reader writes, "I have just searched on Internet about this school " Ecole de Champagne " The school is located in the little town named " Meyrac les bains" ( 700 inhabitants ) It is a mountaneous and very nice region , in middle south of France . The climate is sunny all year. The local economy rests with its hydropathic establishment. Beginning as a young boy I began to travel widely in France, but haven't visited this charming town. The town has an internet site. About the school " la Champagne ". It is a Catholic girls school with a boys abd girls kindergarden. The image shows the entire school."
