U.S. Schools: Carbondale School (about 1903)

Carbondale School
Figure 1.--Here we see the pupils at the Carbondale School in the early 1900s decade. We see a wide age range, looking like all the age grades from 1st to 8th, the normal 8 grade programs of these schools. The portrait is not dated, but the cabinet card looks date from the early-1900s decasde as do the pupils' clothes. The younger children look like many come from low-income families, although we see some Fauntleroy items, especially the collars. This waswithin the last years of the Fauntleroy Craze. The boys do not wear actual Fauntleroy suits, but was as was common there are Fauntleroy related decortive items. The boys wear knee pants and long stockings.

We have found a cabinet card portrait of the Carbondale School, a small rural school in the early 1900s decade. The board adds District 12, but no further information. The problem we have is that there are several towns named Carbondale in the United States, including Colorado, Illinois, and Pennsylvania as well as other states. The name is usually used for towns in or near coal fields. It is likely there were children from coal mining families in the group. This Carbondale appears to be a very small community because it was a small rural school. This is a problem working with American schools because the United States is such a large country. We see a wide age range, looking like all the age grades from 1st to 8th, the normal 8 grade programs of these schools.
