Unidentified School Class Choir (Russia, 1970s)

Figure 1.--Here we see an unidentified mixed school choir, probably in the 1970s. This looks to be a class choir or selected children from a class or several classes of the first or second year children in a school. Notce the accordin accompanist, I think this suggests that the children are probably singing popular songs like Russian folk songs.

Here we see an unidentified mixed school choir, probably in the 1970s. This looks to be a class choir or selected children from a class or several classes of the first or second year children in a school. Notce the accordin accompanist, I think this suggests that the children are probably singing popular songs like Russian folk songs. Given their age and yhe fact that they were selected from a single class or small number of classes, they could not have attempted more difficult music. A Russian reader writes, "Yes, it does look like a school performance. Just what sort I am not sure. An accordeon player was a common thing for almost every celebration in Soviet Russia until the mid-1980s. This included marriage celebrations, birthdays, even physical trainings or any kind of contests in school and pioneer camps, recreational areas, parks. These all figured “garmonist” or “boyanist” (accordeon player). So I can’t conclude that children here are singing Russian folk songs. There are other possibilities including songs of Soviet composers about Lenin, party and young pioneers or simply a children song about mother, school, sun and so on." The children are wearing coordinated costumes and not their mormal school uniforms. The girls wear largehair boes. Both boys ad girls wear whte shirts with colored bows. The bows seem to be different clors. The girls wear dark skirts and the boys wear matching short pnts. They all wear white tights, mostly with strap shoes. Girls commonly wore white long stokings or tights. White was less common for boys, but we do see younger boys wearing them for special occassions.
