Russian Tights: Chronology--1970s

Figure 1.--This Russian home snapshot of a brother and sister is undated. It looks to us, however, as if it was taken in the 1970s. The color is not quite right, but he seems to be wearuing tan or grey tights.

Both tights andlong stockings were worn from 1970-72, but mostly tights after 1972. A Russian reader reports that by 1971-72 it was quite common to see boys dressing up in shortpants suits with tights instead of long stockings. Tights. Another Russian reader writes, "I was born in 1976 and I never wore long stockings. Older people tell me that they were common for boys to wear a a kind of vest over the camisole to which stockings were attached. As far as I know this all disappeared in the late 1960s or early 70s when children began to wear the much more convenient tights." The photograoh here shows a Russian boyvabout 1974 wearing a jacket and short pants with tights. Some boys up to about age 11 wore sailor suits. A Russian reader reports that this was especially common for special occassions like birthdays and Christmas. [HBC did not know that Russian families in the Soviet Union during the 1970s ommonly celbrated Chrstmas.] This continued to be common until about 1978. For some reason this fashion suddenly vanished in 1979-81. The photograph here is undated, but we believe was taken in the 1970s. Colors varied, we see many children weatng grey or tan tight. Whote was also popular, but most for girls. Younger boys might wear whte stockings for special occassions. A good example is an unidentified school choir. We note an unidentified boy on a family outing in the 1970s wearing white long stovkings.
