Slavery: Historical Overview

Indian Ocean slave trade
Figure 1.--The Marxist profesors eachin history at our great universities when discussing slavery and Western civilization. Actully of all the great slave powers, only one was Christian and not at the top of the list. Actually it is Islam and the Islamic powers that were the greal slave powers of history. And the major source of slaves for the Islamic powers, beginning with the Arab Abbasid Caliphate was Sub-Sasharan Africa. The Atlantic slave Trade dominates the moden discussion, actually more slaves were tranbsported across the Saharan and over the Indian Ocean. This is a view of the slave market in Zanzibar. It was published in 'El Mundo en la Mando' (Madrid, Spain: 1878).

Thanks to the Marxist professors that now dominate the cultural and historical debate at our great universities, if yoy ask our yong people who were the great slaving nations of all time, the ned States will be at or near the top of the list. Nothing, however, could be further from the truth. In fact the Unitd States and Western civilization in general will be far down the list. What will be high and at te top of the list is Islam and Islamic nations. Now this is a difficult topic to research, largely because the great slaving nations/socities are mostly historical entities for which detailed statistical data is often lacking. We note one historical study which lists the 10 top largest slaving nations:

1. Pagan Roman Empire - 160 million
2. Islamic Mughal Empire - 112 million
3. Islamic Abbasid Caliphate - 63 million
4. Islamic Mali Empire - 57 million
5. Islamic Delhi Sultanate - 36 million
6. Christian Byzantine Empire - 28 million
6 Confusian Joseon (Korean) Dynasty - 28 million
7. Atheist NAZI Third Reich - 26 million
8.Pagan Ancient Egypt - 13 million
9. Confuscian Qing (Chinese) Bynasty- 12.6 million (potentially 75-125 million)
10 Islamic Umayyad Caliphate - 10 million
10 Various religions Abyssinia (Ethiopian) Empire - 9-10 million

Note the rarely mentioned imprtance of Islam or the Indian Ocean abd Saharan slave trade. Also that there were major slaving nations on all continents except South America, but over half of the captive Africans were transported in the Atlantic slave trade went to Brazil. These results of course challenge what is being taught in American and Western schools. The British, Portuguese, or any European colonial powers are not on the list. The methodology here favors the lager, longer lasting, and impactful empires. This is why the Roman Empire is on the list and not smaller, shrter lasting Classical Greece. Other analytival methods such as slave percentages will yield different results. But even here the United States will no be at the top of the list or even on the list. We will get states like Sparta or the Caribbean sugar islands, now independent contries. Probably Haiti would be at the top of the list. Here the United States might be in the top ten depending on if you list the Caribbean sugar islands indivdually or rather group them by European Empire. The American slave population was highly regional. Very few slaves wereheld in the North, but large nubers in the Deep South where cotton was grown. Here it is important to note that America was one of the only two countries, the other is Britain, that launched an important abolitionist anti-slavery campaign.
